p2p, decentralized wifi sharing.
What is Hotspot?
With technological progress, today it is possible to order McDonalds while sitting in your room, yet we haven’t gotten to the point where Wi-Fi connectivity is everywhere. Everyone has run into an issue of not being able to find a Wi-Fi connection while traveling. Our team noticed that in places that didn’t have free accessible Wi-Fi, the issue was not that a Wi-Fi network wasn’t available but rather that it was locked. So, we created an app called Hotspot.
Hotspot uses blockchain technology to allow users to create guest networks on their Wi-Fi and get paid for letting others use it. For this to work we used a Raspberry Pi that has been modified to act as a router that can create an additional network. The application works on the IOTA network and uses IOTA tokens as micropayments for Wi-Fi usage. In the future, Hotspot plans to use wide range mesh networks to eventually deliver Wi-Fi to places in 3rd world countries where infrastructure is expensive. The goal of Hotspot is to have cheap and accessible Wi-Fi no matter where you are in the world.
